A Brief history of the neighborhood of Palermo
The origin and explanation about the name of Palermo to the neighborhood is not entirely peaceful. While somebody answer if you it have any relation with the Italian city, the possible origins of the name was able to search in Don Juan Dominguez Palermo, who was at the beginning of the 17th century; the owner of the land.
Like it was very common call to the places by the Churches, those it were construted or by the saints to be worshiped, other neighbors contend in fact, the neighborhood is was called because in a oratory is worshipped an image of San Benito of Palermo, so that was cause the faithful used to say that they were going to see Palermo. In fact, this was the neighborhood of restorer of the laws, Don Juan Manuel de Rosas. In a begining, the owner had of a large part of the land (some 540 blocks). It was for about 1836, when he became a great transformation; the privileged owner of these beautiful sites, where he decided to construct his official residence in which location, today they are the current avenues Liberator and Sarmiento.
But history has its secrets, and after the defeat of February 3 th, 1852 at Caseros, Justo José de Urquiza; the General winner, decided to occupy the residence, then later would be the headquarters of the School of Arts and Crafts, of the Military College and the Naval Academy.
On 1889, the house of Restorer was demolished completely, the objective was to give more “air” to the park created by Sarmiento, the old political enemy of Roses.
In the outsides of the lands, of until the governor of Buenos Aires; there was on November 11th 1875; the park opened was called 3 th of February (called in commemoration of the date of the battle of Caseros).
There is today a big lung of Buenos Aires with 300 hectares between Libertador Avenue, Salguero st., Rafael Obligado avenue and Pampa st.; there are wonders places like the lakes and their gardens, where each 21 th September, students join self to celebrate its day, so while the families take a good time to stay in the place to stroll, it is a beautiful ground during the rest of the year.
